While the Muxika we know today was officially formed in the 1960s with the merger of Ibarruri and Gorozika, its history dates back centuries, with powerful lineages and structures that have withstood the test of time.
Muxika wasn’t always a single municipality. Until 1966, it was the sum of three independent towns: Muxika, Ibarruri, and Gorozika. Hence its motto: “Hiru herri, udalerri bat” (Three towns, one municipality). This merger created a large territory dotted with neighborhoods that each maintain their own identity and a rich heritage worth exploring.
The origin of the name “Muxika” is uncertain, but there are two main theories: one links it to the Basque word for “peach” (muxika), although there is no confirmed connection to the town, while the other ties it to the powerful Muxika lineage that ruled the area in the Middle Ages. What’s clear is that, between its history and its natural surroundings, this is a destination that never disappoints.
In the 14th century, the Muxika family emerged as a branch of the Avendaños, one of the most influential lineages in Bizkaia. Its founder, Juan Galíndez de Muxika, inherited these lands and left a lasting mark on history. The Muxika Tower House, built in the 16th century in the San Román neighborhood, stands as a testament to the family’s power and influence.
Strategically located, this fortification controlled the route between Gernika and Amorebieta, as well as the passage of the Oca River. Although time has taken its toll on the tower, its presence still reminds us of an era when local nobility ruled the region.
Muxika isn’t just about noble lineages—it’s also a journey through traditional Basque rural architecture. In the Unda neighborhood, you’ll find medieval farmhouses that seem frozen in time. The San Román Hermitage, an impressive example of rural Romanesque architecture, is another highlight for those who appreciate sacred art.
The neighborhoods of Maguna, Maume, Gorozika, and Ajuria perfectly blend tradition with nature. Here, old farmhouses and chapels are seamlessly integrated into the rolling green landscape, offering picture-perfect scenery at every turn.
If one thing defines Muxika’s cultural identity, it’s its deep connection to the Basque language and bertsolaritza (improvised verse singing). With more than 90% of its residents using Basque in their daily lives, this is one of the most euskaldun (Basque-speaking) towns in all of Urdaibai. It’s no coincidence that some of Bizkaia’s most renowned bertsolaris (oral poets) were born here.
The Enbeita family is a prime example, having produced generations of bertsolaris, including Kepa Enbeita, Balendin Enbeita, Abel Enbeita, Jon Enbeita, Oihane Enbeita, and Onintza Enbeita—the latter two still actively performing today. Another famous local bertsolari was Jon Lopategi, who left a lasting mark on the art of improvised Basque poetry.
Muxika is the perfect getaway for those seeking peace and nature. Its scattered geography makes it a haven for rural guesthouses, ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle. Some of the most recommended stays include Iberreko Errota and Astobieta, where the lush surroundings and tranquility are guaranteed.
From here, it’s easy to explore the surrounding mountains, enjoy hiking trails, or simply relax amidst green fields and forests. It’s the ideal spot to recharge in an authentically Basque setting.
Muxika may not be the most famous town in Urdaibai, but it is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating. Its blend of history, culture, and nature makes it a truly unique destination—perfect for wandering through its neighborhoods and uncovering its rich heritage.
